MEET ALEX

Drawn to themes of growth and transformation, Alex Jutras explores how objects, spaces, and personal histories can be reworked and reimagined. Her work challenges traditional notions of material value, embracing sustainability, reinvention, and the unexpected.

Alex studied at Clark University in Worcester, MA, graduating in 2019 with dual degrees in Studio Art and Media, Culture, and the Arts.

Her appreciation for using found materials began as a way to save money on art supplies as a college student but evolved into a creative challenge. She repurposed discarded objects, including plastic bags found on sidewalks, old canvases from high school, and leftover charcoal and newsprint from the studio. These early experimentations laid the foundation for her current art style and became an extension of her passion for sustainability.

In 2018, Alex founded Back Alley Clothing (BAC), a thrifted, vintage, and upcycled clothing company. BAC gained traction in the Worcester community and was well-known through local pop-up shops and events across Central Massachusetts.

After returning to her hometown in Maine in 2021, Alex launched her Leaf Illuminations art series, using foraged oak leaves and branches from her childhood backyard as stencils for spray-painted compositions. This series was showcased in the Forage exhibition at the New Hampshire Art Association and was adapted into a mural installation at the WC Gallery.

Now based in New Hampshire, Alex’s growing passion for surfing led her to explore skating and snowboarding in 2023. Building on her upcycling experience with Back Alley Clothing, she co-founded Back Alley Boards to merge her artistic vision with her newfound love for these sports. Alex continues to find ways to connect with and strengthen her local community through sustainability, art, and creative collaboration.

ALEX’S ART

"My work is about transformation—giving new life to forgotten materials and reimagining the stories they can tell. Whether it’s discarded objects like plastic bags, or natural elements like fallen leaves, I’m drawn to the idea that everything has the potential to be something more."Alex Jutras

BOARDS BY ALEX

"I approach upcycling boards the same way I do my art—by layering, repurposing, and reworking what’s already there. I use stencil techniques, found materials, and textures to create something new without erasing the board’s history. The scratches, dents, and worn graphics all become part of the final piece.”
